Accounting firms face unique technology challenges. Tax seasons and financial reporting deadlines are non-negotiable—when IT systems go down, work stops and deadlines are missed. The firm also houses extraordinarily sensitive financial data, making cybersecurity critical. “We have a lot of information that we house that’s very sensitive,” Mason explains. “If we had a breach of our IT or people accessed sensitive data, that would probably destroy our business.”

LNS had enjoyed a successful relationship with a small IT provider for years. “We’re a pretty loyal kind of firm,” Mason explains. “We had our prior IT guys, which were a small kind of two-guy shop with four employees, for years and years and years.”

Everything changed when that company was acquired by a larger IT group. “They sold out to a larger IT group that we were probably too small for them,” Mason recalls. “We kind of fell through the cracks with them most of the time.

The personalized attention disappeared, and the larger company began outsourcing support overseas. “All of a sudden, I was talking to an IT person that wasn’t in Canada, which I hate that.” Mason states. “If I’m paying my money here in Canada for a service, I want my money staying in Canada.”

LNS stayed because of one dedicated IT professional, Adam, who kept things together. When Adam left, it was time to find a new partner.

LNS interviewed three IT companies.
